I started my teaching career as a Senior Physical Science and Life Sciences teacher in South Africa. It was here that I volunteered to assist students with English as their second language who found the curriculum extremely difficult. My interest in teaching English as an additional language was sparked by this experience so I attended many courses to help me assist these students with their English speaking, reading and writing skills. I found early on in my teaching career that I had an enthusiasm and desire to assist students who were struggling and who wished to better their academic qualifications but were unable to due to circumstances beyond their control. For the past 38 years I have been involved in teaching and developing strategies to teach English to non-English speaking students in South Africa. In 1991 I founded an NGO, SMILE, to assist teachers with the teaching of English as an additional language. I have written numerous Learning and Teaching Support Materials for English Additional Language for grades 4 - 12. I have also been involved in a number of teacher development projects. For the past year I have been working full time at Inanda Seminary as part English First Additional Language Teacher and a facilitator for their community programmes. At present I am editing and writing the teacher guides for textbooks for English Home Language students from grade 7 - 12. Over the past 35 years I have worked in many roles in the education sector but my first love has always been working in the classroom with students. As I reach retirement I believe that my experience and love for teaching will stand me in good stead to tutor small groups of students to help them reach their academic potential.

I teach all levels and abilities of English & Employability Skills to Secondary, Further Education & HE. I have been fortunate to have worked in a variety of colleges & schools in Yorkshire and surrounding areas, and have experienced a wide variety of student/pupil ability. I ensure students achieve and invariably, exceed their expectations, whilst motivating, encouraging and supporting their learning. Consequently, with careful planning of lessons, a vast range of resources, together with a wealth of knowledge and an abundance of inspiration, I ensure achievement in even the most reticent of learners. My priorities are unfailingly, to ensure differentiation and inclusivity. I develop effective ways of overcoming barriers to learning and sustaining effective teaching through assessment of each learner’s needs. After identifying the particular needs of each student, an ILP- Individual Learning Plan is devised, tailored to match the ability of the learner. The ILP, is a working document, reviewed each week, with targets for achievement. By monitoring and continually seeking learning opportunities for each pupil, progression is ensured. I would also ensure collaboration with managers/team leaders, to ensure that each learner is given equal priority, to support and progress effectively, with resources used for maximum effect. I believe a holistic approach successfully delivered, whilst supporting the educational needs of students from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds works best. This way I find that the teaching and learning process is easier for all, as it ensures each student has an equal opportunity to develop and flourish, whilst reaching their full potential. English teaching is both a demanding and a fascinating area to be involved in, as language and its developments are central to our culture and identity. Subsequently, to be in a position to influence and inspire all learners to extend their language powers and knowledge in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing is a great achievement and a privilege to play a part in.
