I started my teaching career as a Senior Physical Science and Life Sciences teacher in South Africa. It was here that I volunteered to assist students with English as their second language who found the curriculum extremely difficult. My interest in teaching English as an additional language was sparked by this experience so I attended many courses to help me assist these students with their English speaking, reading and writing skills. I found early on in my teaching career that I had an enthusiasm and desire to assist students who were struggling and who wished to better their academic qualifications but were unable to due to circumstances beyond their control. For the past 38 years I have been involved in teaching and developing strategies to teach English to non-English speaking students in South Africa. In 1991 I founded an NGO, SMILE, to assist teachers with the teaching of English as an additional language. I have written numerous Learning and Teaching Support Materials for English Additional Language for grades 4 - 12. I have also been involved in a number of teacher development projects. For the past year I have been working full time at Inanda Seminary as part English First Additional Language Teacher and a facilitator for their community programmes. At present I am editing and writing the teacher guides for textbooks for English Home Language students from grade 7 - 12. Over the past 35 years I have worked in many roles in the education sector but my first love has always been working in the classroom with students. As I reach retirement I believe that my experience and love for teaching will stand me in good stead to tutor small groups of students to help them reach their academic potential.

I am currently a second year medical student and I have been tutoring for 3 years, whether that be in person or online. Some of my interests include fitness (gym) and professional esports due to me enjoying the tactical aspect of it. I have taught privately and in group classes, which has made my communication skills more effective as I have directly my teachings accordingly. On top of this, I have taught subjects from KS3 to A Levels such as Triple Science and Economics and this highlights my flexibility and versatility overall. Whilst working under a company, I had the opportunity of developing how I go about tutoring the same concept to different students in the same group given that they comprehend ideas in various ways.. Furthermore, tutoring privately to individuals until now has allowed me to gain more interpersonal skills and ensure that my student understood everything by constantly enquiring or asking questions. This active feedback made my students not only develop more confidence, but also more engaged and overall retain information better. I am comfortable with using a range of platforms like Lessonspace and Zoom, as long as it allows the use of my iPad to visually explain topics. I believe that with my skillset and experience shown by my ongoing career in tutoring, I will be best suited to being a tutor under you.
